Project Viewpoint needs ZombieBuddy installed as a Java loader as well as enabled in the mod list. Set up and verify the loader first, enable Viewpoint, then test its camera in a separate world. The published default is O for first-person mode and Shift + O to switch first/third person; check your configured keys if these do nothing.
Check which mod you actually installed
Project Viewpoint is Workshop item 3809306528, mod ID Viewpoint, and lists ZombieBuddy as required. “Project Zomboid Viewpoint” and “Project Viewpoint mod” refer to this same setup. Match the numeric item ID when following a search result.

PZ3D is a different project
PZ3D is the separate Workshop item 3807334881 by kolpaque. Its 0.6.0 description introduces its own pz3d Loader and lists Insert as its 3D toggle. Those loader files and that key are not Viewpoint instructions.
For a first diagnostic run, choose one camera mod. If you previously changed launch options for PZ3D, keep a copy of them and follow that project’s own removal instructions before testing Viewpoint alone. Do not combine loader recipes just because both videos show a first-person camera.

Prepare a small, reversible test
These are preparation checks, not claims that a new world makes every mod safe or compatible. Java addons can run code outside the game; approval should be a deliberate choice about the author and file you obtained.
- Record the exact game patch shown in your menu, operating system, Normal or Alternate Launch choice, and installed mod versions. Keep those details together.
- Back up the save you care about while the game is closed. Use a separate new test world with only the required mods for the first camera check; leave your established mod collection for later.
- Confirm that the unmodified game reaches its menu. Preserve existing launch options and any launcher files you intend to edit so you can restore the previous configuration.
- Open the author Workshop pages linked below in Steam, check their current dependencies, and let downloads finish. A missing item directory is a download/path problem to solve before copying anything.

Install and verify ZombieBuddy first
A framework loading is only the first checkpoint. It does not prove that Viewpoint’s Java code was accepted or that the camera can render a scene.
- Use the ZombieBuddy guide linked at the end of this page for the operating-system-specific installation. Workshop subscription alone does not finish the loader setup.
- Enable the dependency in the game mod manager, completely close the game, then launch through the method you configured.
- During loading, look for the ZombieBuddy version indicator. If it never appears, work through the loader guide before changing Viewpoint graphics or keybindings.

Do you still need the temporary 42.21 fix?
ZombieBuddy v2.3.4 was released on 3 October and explicitly backports fix #56. Therefore, the older advice to install a community temporary fix is not a universal requirement for a current setup. Start by comparing the version actually loaded by the game with the current author release.
Do not overwrite a newer official loader with a JAR from an old video simply to match its screenshot. If you previously used a replacement, record its origin, preserve your rollback copy, and return to a consistent author-supported installation before adding more patches.

Enable Viewpoint and complete the first launch
The author added a setup wizard and configurable keybindings in the 30 September update. That means a current installation may differ from the first release shown in a tutorial.
- Subscribe to the exact Viewpoint item and wait for the download to finish. In the game, enable Viewpoint with its dependency for the test setup; when using an existing save, inspect that save’s mod selection too.
- Fully exit and restart. If the loader asks about Viewpoint, compare the displayed mod and file location with what you intended to install before deciding whether to allow it.
- Enter the test world and finish any setup dialog shown by your installed release. Record the settings selected rather than changing several options at once.
- Try the camera controls below. Confirm that you can return to the ordinary view, move, turn, open an inventory and interact with an object before trying your main save.

Switch first person, third person and cursor mode
Test normal movement before free-camera modes. If a shortcut conflicts with your game controls, inspect your installed Viewpoint key settings and assign an unused combination. A key from another camera mod is not a useful loading test.
| Published default | Action |
|---|---|
| O | Toggle first-person view |
| Shift + O | Alternate first and third person |
| Middle mouse button | Capture or release the cursor |
| Delete | Open Viewpoint settings |
| Insert + O | Free camera |
| Shift + Insert + O | Physical free camera |

Choose a shader without losing your baseline
The published settings offer Vanilla, Default and Vivid looks; custom packs go in Zomboid\viewpoint-shaderpacks. Start with Vanilla, then change one effect or preset at a time.
- Stand in the same place and note the preset, resolution and visible problem before changing a setting. Compare the same scene after the change.
- If a custom pack produces missing surfaces, severe flicker or an unusable frame rate, return to the built-in preset that previously worked. Restart the test if the result is unclear.
- Keep the default working configuration available while trying optional addons. A shader change should not be used to repair a loader that never started.

Treat Minecraft shader support as experimental
The 30 September author notes label Iris shader compatibility experimental. That is not a promise that any Minecraft shader ZIP will work. Follow the current Viewpoint pack instructions for the exact file you choose; avoid converting a failed experiment into your only working configuration.
The same update changed rendering and input behavior, followed by two 1 October hotfixes. When a video and the installed UI disagree, check the author’s Change Notes first.

Diagnose the stage that failed
Upstream #56 documents a concrete 42.21 loader mismatch that could prevent Java mods from loading. Its original validation was code-level matching, not an in-game boot; this site has not independently tested the released correction.
| What you observe | Next check |
|---|---|
| No ZombieBuddy loading indicator | Loader files, launch mode and agent setup; use the ZombieBuddy guide. |
| Loader starts, but no dependent Java mod loads on 42.21 | Check the loaded version and the official #56 fix before camera settings. |
| Viewpoint is enabled, but approval blocks it | Read the exact policy or signature message; confirm the intended download and matching files. |
| Camera shortcut has no effect | Check configured keybindings, active save mod selection and the preceding loader/approval checkpoints. |
| The world appears, but textures or lighting are wrong | Return to the known baseline preset; remove optional render addons from the separate test. |
| Only a multiplayer session fails | Compare with your single-player test and collect the server’s mod list; client success does not establish server compatibility. |

Recover from a blocked or mismatched Java file
A signature failure is a file identity/integrity problem to investigate. Obtain the JAR and any accompanying signature together from the author’s current distribution. Do not pair a replacement JAR from a comment with an unrelated signature or enable every Java file just to silence a message.
If you chose Deny by mistake, use the ZombieBuddy approval instructions to revisit that specific decision. Keep unrelated approvals intact. A valid signature identifies the signing key and file; it does not certify that an addon is harmless or compatible.

Return to the original view or remove the setup
- If the camera is still responsive, use your configured view toggle to leave 3D mode. If necessary, quit from the game menu.
- Disable Viewpoint and optional Viewpoint addons in the test setup, then restart. Leave ZombieBuddy installed if other deliberately enabled mods need it.
- To remove the loader too, follow the ZombieBuddy uninstall sequence: undo its launcher injection before deleting its loader files. Unsubscribing alone does not undo a copied loader or launcher edit.
- Reopen the separate baseline world and confirm that the menu and ordinary view work again. Restore an affected save from your pre-test backup if needed; removing a mod is not proof of save repair.

What to include in a useful bug report
Capture one reproducible sequence, the game patch, loaded ZombieBuddy version, Viewpoint item/version, operating system, launch method, GPU, preset and optional mods. Add the relevant Viewpoint lines from Zomboid\console.txt and an actual screenshot if the symptom is visual. Review logs for private paths or server details before posting.
If Steam cannot display or download an item, open the exact author link inside the Steam client and check the author’s current notices. A search extractor’s removed/incompatible banner is not enough evidence of an actual takedown; do not substitute an unverified mirror.
