Inspect the food and restore a reliable cooling source if available. 42.21 documents gradual warm-up on the outage day and corrected refrigeration for food in bags; neither is a universal spoilage countdown.

Two patch changes to keep separate
The 42.21 notes say fridges and freezers warm gradually on the day the power goes out. They also say refrigeration is correctly applied to food in a bag inside a fridge or freezer. These are separate fixes: one concerns losing power, the other concerns how bagged food receives cooling.
An older recommendation to unpack every bag may therefore describe an earlier bug. Check the patch you actually play before following it. Likewise, temporary cold storage after shutoff should not become a promise that every item lasts the same number of hours.

A short outage checklist
- Record the game time when you notice the outage. If you do not know the actual shutoff time, keep that uncertain instead of starting a guaranteed grace-period timer.
- Inspect the appliance and food state. Compare the actual items you care about rather than assuming that every container and food category changes together.
- If a working backup power source is available, confirm the appliance is actually served by it. A running generator elsewhere is not proof the fridge receives power.
- Prioritize the items you can still use and your longer-lasting supplies. Avoid wasting time on a guessed spoilage timer while the cause of the outage remains unresolved.
- Recheck the food after restoring power. Keep the observation; do not assume that a restart reverses any freshness loss that already occurred.
Food in bags inside cold storage
For 42.21, use the corrected bag behavior as the documented expectation. If you see a mismatch, record the exact food, bag, appliance, power state and patch. Test a comparable item outside the bag in a separate control setup. That comparison is more informative than comparing two different food types with different histories.
We have not tested every nested-container arrangement, modded bag or server behavior. The patch statement does not validate all of them. Keep a modded discrepancy separate from the official vanilla change.

If outages keep happening
Investigate the supply rather than repeatedly moving the same food. Record generator fuel, condition, the connected load and elapsed game time. Note which appliances actually went dark. Use the load-check guide to separate a fuel discrepancy from a connection or maintenance problem.
Keep a food plan that still works when the electrical setup fails. The exact preservation routes depend on the item and available current recipes. This guide does not import an old frozen-storage multiplier or give an unverified curing method. Check the food’s current information and recipe before committing your last reserve.
