Do this first

At Breaking Point is the highest level of the Stress moodle. It is not the Panic moodle and does not, by itself, prove Knox infection. Get out of immediate danger, address the source that applies to your character and use a stress-reducing activity. For Smoker withdrawal, use nicotine; for Fear of blood, wash the character and bloodied clothing. Beta blockers address Panic.

Evidence boundary. The Stressed and Panic wiki snapshots are explicitly labelled 42.12.3. Official 42.14 notes change Discomfort to cause stress; final 42.16 notes reduce stress gain from tall-fence thumping. Older causes therefore need patch context. This site has not tested Build 42.21 and publishes no precise stress decay time, penalty percentage or guaranteed cure.

Identify Stress and keep Panic separate

Hover over the moodle and read its name. The reviewed Stress page lists the progression Tense, Agitated, Stressed Out and At Breaking Point. High stress can worsen combat and build unhappiness.

If you also have Panic

Panic has its own moodle and is commonly associated with seeing zombies. Its reference lists beta blockers for temporary relief. If you have both moodles, check each after treatment: lowering Panic is not evidence that At Breaking Point has cleared.

Use the branch that matches your character

  1. Leave immediate danger and reach a place where you can complete actions. Do not use more combat as the first stress treatment when the character is already struggling.
  2. Smoker: if you have gone without nicotine, use the available smoking or chewing-tobacco action. The cited wiki says withdrawal stress is tracked separately and cannot be removed by other activities.
  3. Fear of blood: wash the character and bloodied clothing or items contributing to that trait’s stress. After washing, avoid immediately handling the same bloodied gear.
  4. For other stress, complete a piece of readable leisure literature that offers a moodle benefit. Choose a usable item and finish the reading action; a skill book is not automatically a stress remedy. Petting an available animal is another activity listed by the source.
  5. Allow time to advance in safety and inspect the Stress label again. If it remains or quickly returns, continue with the contributing-source checks below rather than repeating the same action indefinitely.

Check Discomfort and the patch-specific environment

On 42.14 and later, include the Discomfort moodle in the investigation: official 42.14 notes changed it to increase stress, and identify encumbrance while in a vehicle as a discomfort contributor. If that applies, get to safety and unload excess carried items before sitting in the vehicle again. Compare whether Discomfort and stress return under the lighter load.

Do not assume old fence advice describes your patch

The older Stress wiki lists zombie banging as a contributor. The final 42.16 release notes say stress gain from zombies thumping tall fences was reduced. That is weaker than the preceding preview’s wording that fence stress would stop. This guide follows the final notes and does not claim every fence noise is harmless.

If banging continues around your shelter, move away from that immediate threat before reading or washing. Record whether the stress rises again in the quieter location. This is a useful comparison, not a measurement of an exact sound radius.

Judge success by a lower stress stage that stays lower

A lower stage after treatment is a useful first result. If it immediately returns, a continuing contributor may still be present. Check Panic and Unhappy independently so that one disappearing does not hide another.

If stress accompanies sickness, overheating or declining health after a zombie wound, examine the Health panel and your world’s infection settings. The cited Health reference describes several infection symptoms together. Neither a stress moodle nor an Infected wound label is a standalone Knox-infection test.

If maximum stress repeatedly returns without an explanation

A historical 42.1 player report describes repeated maximum stress after replacing a Smoker character; a later reply mentions 42.15.2. It is a player report, not proof that your current patch or save has the same issue.

Keep your save and gather the exact patch, single-player or online mode, current traits, moodles, injury history, mods and what changes the stress. Test a separate unmodded new save only if you can reproduce the problem safely. Include the observed recurrence and attempted treatments when reporting it; do not delete the original character as a diagnostic shortcut.

Sources & verification

The moodle identity and character-specific branches are source-based. The order of checks is an editorial troubleshooting workflow. A player bug report is cited only for its historical observation, not as a confirmed current bug or a diagnosis of your save.

At Breaking Point is the fourth Stress moodle level; lists nicotine withdrawal, Fear of blood, stress-reducing activities and combat/unhappiness effects. Later official patches alter some stress sources; numeric penalties are not reproduced here.
  • PZwiki · PanicReviewed 8 October 2026 through the web text snapshot. Explicitly labelled 42.12.3. Panic has its own Moodle ID and can be temporarily reduced by beta blockers. This is a separate mechanism from the Stress moodle.
  • The Indie Stone · 42.14.0 Unstable releasedDeveloper nasKo, 16 February 2026; reviewed 8 October 2026. Final release notes change Discomfort to increase stress rather than unhappiness, and describe discomfort from encumbrance while in a vehicle. These are patch-specific changes, not evidence for every older branch.
  • The Indie Stone · 42.16.0 Unstable releasedDeveloper nasKo, 31 March 2026; reviewed 8 October 2026. Final notes say stress gain from zombies thumping tall fences was reduced. A preceding preview used stronger wording; this guide follows the final notes and does not assert that all fence stress was removed.
  • PZwiki · HealthReviewed 8 October 2026 through the web text snapshot, revision 1236045 (23 October 2025). The page labels its review as 41.78.16 and warns that some parts may be automatically updated to 42.13.1. Supports fracture location restrictions and the distinction between injuries; not a verified 42.21 treatment test.
  • The Indie Stone forums · Stress after respawn in 42.1Player report dated 24 January 2025, with a later reply mentioning 42.15.2; reviewed 8 October 2026.
