Do this first

For a fractured limb, carry a Splint, open Health and right-click the injured body part or its injury text to choose the splint treatment. A splint helps recovery; it does not instantly remove Fracture. Head and torso fractures cannot be splinted. Treat any bleeding separately and keep the splint on while the fracture remains.

Evidence boundary. PZwiki Health and First Aid were reviewed on 8 October 2026. Both still label their main coverage 41.78.16 and warn of automatically updated Build 42 content. The available Make Splint table uses newer item names, including Wooden Rod. This site has not tested the recipe or treatment on Build 42.21 and does not promise a number of healing days.

When a splint is the right treatment

Use this workflow when the Health panel identifies Fracture on an arm or leg. Pain or a limp alone does not identify the injury: a cut, burn or another wound can need different treatment. The cited health reference describes slower movement for a leg fracture and reduced combat ability for an arm fracture.

If the fracture is on the head or torso, skip the splint attempt and plan recovery in shelter. A missing Splint action on those locations is an expected restriction. If another injury is bleeding, apply its bandage treatment as well; a fracture splint is not a substitute for stopping bleeding.

Make a portable splint

The visible First Aid recipe table produces one Splint with one fabric piece and one wooden support, with no tool, skill, learned recipe or workstation requirement listed. Search the crafting panel for Make Splint and use the requirement list in your own build.

Apply the splint through Health

  1. Reach shelter before starting a medical action. Bring a ready Splint into the treating character’s inventory so the action can find it.
  2. Open Health using the heart icon, or the assigned Health key (H is the documented default). Locate the body part that actually lists Fracture.
  3. Right-click that body part or its injury text. Select the available splint treatment and the Splint item; allow the action to finish without walking away.
  4. Reopen the same body part. Confirm the treatment is shown as applied rather than assuming a queued action completed. Leave it applied while Fracture is present.

Know what successful treatment looks like

The first success check is an applied splint on the intended fractured limb. The later recovery check is that Fracture no longer appears. A completed treatment action is not proof the bone has already healed.

First Aid skill affects splint effectiveness and fracture recovery in the cited reference. Comfrey poultice is also listed as an aid to broken bones. Use it only if your installed game provides the recipe and application action; it is an optional addition, not a reason to postpone the splint. Keep food, water and essential supplies within easy reach while recovering.

If the Splint action is missing

  1. Confirm the injury line says Fracture and that it is on a splintable limb. Do not keep trying to apply one to the head or torso.
  2. If you brought only wood, craft the finished Splint first. The recipe needs fabric too. Do not confuse a full Sheet with the medical rag requested by the recipe.
  3. If a required input is greyed out, compare its exact item name with the live recipe. Move the ready Splint into main inventory and retry the menu in a safe place.
  4. If the timed action was interrupted, repeat the application once and inspect the same limb afterward. If it is already splinted, do not remove it just because pain persists.
  5. If the action still fails, record the exact patch, limb, injury text, inventory items and mods. Reproduce in a separate test save before treating it as a vanilla bug; keep the original save.

Sources & verification

The injury restrictions and treatment workflow come from the B41-labelled wiki pages. The visible recipe table is recorded separately because its version coverage is mixed. Use the recipe requirements shown by your installed game if they differ. The planning and success checks below are editorial recommendations.

  • PZwiki · HealthReviewed 8 October 2026 through the web text snapshot, revision 1236045 (23 October 2025). The page labels its review as 41.78.16 and warns that some parts may be automatically updated to 42.13.1. Supports fracture location restrictions and the distinction between injuries; not a verified 42.21 treatment test.
  • PZwiki · First AidReviewed 8 October 2026 through the web text snapshot, revision 1310241 (5 January 2026). Page header and category say 41.78.16 with an automatic-update warning for 42.13.1. Its recipe table lists Make Splint with one fabric strip and one plank, tree branch or wooden rod. The recipe table and legacy skill prose must not be treated as one verified Build 42 implementation.
