Do this first

Start with one clear ground-level soil tile, a digging tool and a suitable seed item in your inventory. Open the tile’s gardening menu and read the full sow-action tooltip.

Evidence boundary. This is a 42.21 checking workflow. Menu paths and planting restrictions are drawn from an older Agriculture wiki snapshot and need confirmation in your current world.

Prepare one test tile

A missing planting action is easier to investigate on one tile than across a large field. Choose an accessible patch of ordinary dirt or grass outside. Move away from construction, furniture and vegetation that could obscure which object you are clicking. Check the same tile from a second position if the first menu does not match what you expected.

The older Wiki workflow uses a digging tool to make furrows, then the furrow’s context menu to sow. In that snapshot, the paths are Gardening > Dig Furrows and Plowed Land > Sow. Treat those as navigation hints: translated labels and later patches can differ. Read the tooltip in the current client rather than searching for an exact screenshot match.

If no crop appears in the menu

  1. Check the item name. A seed packet, loose seed, harvested vegetable and dried seed material are not interchangeable assumptions. Inspect available item actions before discarding or processing anything.
  2. Put the seed item in your character’s inventory for the control test. Record the quantity shown and any requirement in the unavailable-action tooltip. Do not use a Build 41 seed-count table for every Build 42 crop.
  3. Confirm that the tile actually became a furrow. Clicking adjacent ground or an existing plant gives a different context.
  4. Read the planting information you have learned for that crop and the current in-game month. A calendar from a different patch is a secondary reference.
  5. If the action is still absent, record the patch, mods, tile location, item name and full tooltip. Change one condition, then retry the same tile.

Learn the crop before committing a field

The older Agriculture page documents learning crop seasons from seed-packet instructions or magazines. If the matching read action is present, use it before planning your main planting. Keep the crop’s own information with your seed reserve; discovering that you lack its growing information after sowing makes later troubleshooting harder.

Once your small test planting is alive, inspect it and make your first water check. Only expand after you can repeat the sowing workflow. Starting a field during an emergency food shortage leaves little room to investigate a failed action or an uncertain season. Keep another food source while the trial grows.

Rooftops and modded seeds are separate tests

If you are trying a roof, basement, custom greenhouse or modded seed, compare it with a separate ordinary outdoor ground plot. Check the world’s farming restrictions before changing the construction. The control plot helps identify whether the issue follows the location or the crop item. Do not remove mods from your only long-running save just to test a menu.
