Project Zomboid Build 42 farming troubleshooting
A failed crop can look like a water problem, a seasonal warning or a missing action. Choose the observation you can actually inspect; a dead plot does not preserve every condition that killed it.

No sow action
Check seeds, prepared soil, the action tooltip and relevant tools before changing your entire field.
The sow option is missingAlive but declining
Record the living plant’s current information. Separate water, season and disease flags rather than naming one universal cause.
Crops are dyingHarvest or seed problem
Inspect the current growth stage and the available action. Food harvest and collecting seeds are different decisions.

- Crops are dying
Check water readings, sowing-season warnings and visible symptoms in Project Zomboid Build 42. Separate current observations from unknown causes.
- The sow option is missing
Troubleshoot a missing sow action in Project Zomboid Build 42. Check the furrow, seed item, crop information and the action tooltip.
- Water looks fine, but growth stops
Compare the water reading and displayed requirement for the same living crop. Check whether watering completed without assuming a universal dose.
- Is this the wrong planting month?
Read the crop’s learned planting information and compare it with the sowing date. Check season warnings without relying on an outdated crop calendar.
- A harvest gave no seeds
Check the harvest action and distinguish food from seed collection in Build 42. Keep crop-specific stages and unavailable information separate.
- Did walking over the farm kill it?
Official 42.21 notes clarify that player footsteps do not damage crops. Keep that separate from other traffic and unexplained crop failures.
